So Amelia has spent the better part of the last 3 months sick. We're talking almost a third of her life here has been shadowed with croup, bronchitis, whooping cough, and now our most recent ailment...
Intussusception.
Yep, this was a new word to me as well. It means that ones intestines have "telescoped" on top of each other. It is found in a low percentage of kids, and typically before the age of one. It can be very serious and appreciated the rapid/ star treatment from the ER.
So the Thursday before last I found a blood clot the size of a quarter in Amelia's diaper. There were smaller ones as well with chunks of mucus that had blood in it as well. This set us on a path of many studies and tests over the next two days. It was very traumatic for Amelia but probably more so for mom :) After rounds and rounds of tests we were left with no answers, everything came back normal. Even her test for Intussusception. She was feeling better (she had 3 days of high fever, days of extreme lethargy, diarrhea, 4 diapers of clots etc...) but still wanted an answer for the clots. All we knew at this point is that they were coming from her lower organs.
So this past Friday we had some strings pulled and bypassed the 2 month waiting list for the GI (thanks Mike) and found out that she did have a milder case of Intussusception that corrected itself by the time we went to the ER on Saturday. The doctor looked at the labs and said she had a bacterial infection that caused her intestines to telescope on top of each other. She is at risk of it happening again till she's about two. We feel very blessed and know that it is because of so many prayers that she was healed. Thank you guys so much for checking up on us and lifting up Amelia in prayer.
Here are a few pictures from our adventure
This is during her 1st study, a Meckels scan. It was an hour long and she screamed herself to sleep after thirty minutes.
After the Meckel's scan, she's looking a little rough.
Here she is doing a puzzle in between tests. Her arm is wrapped to keep her from pulling at her IV.
Uh, I love that toosh!
This was the second round of tests. She is less "thrashy" because nothing is over her face. We played The Beatles Rockababy and sang "Hey Jude" to keep her calm. We also practiced finding "mommy's nose." A new favorite game.
I think she is going to be a southpaw. She didn't let having a club for an arm slow her down. She still crawled around, pulled up on things and played with her large nub. It was the least of her worries. This was while we waited for results.
The next day was so sad cause her IV was on her right arm and they had it wrapped to a board and not matter how hard she tried she could not get her thumb in her mouth. Which is what she does when she is tired. She would grab her right thumb with her left hand and try to force it in, so sad.
But now we are ALL better!
